Ideas On Tap ceases monthly conversations | Carson City Nevada News

In 2018, Mississippian native Mike Smith started Ideas on Tap, monthly humanities-based community discussions on important issues. Each program included a panel discussion featuring knowledgeable participants who presented a wide range on the topic, as well as an opportunity for audience members to share their thoughts and questions. Due to lack of community support and attendance, I had to make the difficult decision to end the monthly interactive conversations.

I would like to personally thank those who have supported me since the launch of this initiative in 2018, some have participated in it every month for three consecutive years. Special thanks to Ryan and the team at Union Eatery and Brewery for providing us with a venue to host monthly community discussions.

To say I didn’t enjoy setting up these monthly programs is an understatement, but when the average attendance drops from 20 to around 8 sometimes 5 people show up, it’s no longer an exciting and enjoyable experience. When the pandemic hit, we took a sabbatical and relaunched the IOT in late 2021 from there, I guess citizens no longer saw the value of such discussions.

It is my fervent hope in the very near future that some person or organization would see the need to host such interactive community discussions for citizens to come and have fun in a relaxed atmosphere to be part of a community dialogue. In the meantime, since we are not officially meeting, please continue to keep your ideas at hand.
