SmackDown Women’s Championship game announced for Crown Jewel

WWE.com confirmed today that the SmackDown Women’s Championship will be defended at Crown Jewel on Thursday, October 21.

‘The Man’ Becky Lynch will defend her championship against Bianca Belair and Sasha Banks in a Triple Threat Match.

Crown Jewel will take place at the Mohammed Abdo Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

This will be Becky’s first title defense since winning the championship at SummerSlam, where she made her triumphant return to WWE after a sabbatical due to pregnancy. Lynch beat Belair in just 27 seconds to win her fourth women’s title on SmackDown.

The trio will make history by becoming the third woman to take place in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Local laws prohibited women from participating in events, but this position has been relaxed somewhat in recent times.

Natalya faced Lacey in the Crown Jewel 2019 pay-per-view, becoming the first-ever women’s game. The second came a few months later, when Bayley defended the SmackDown Women’s Championship against Naomi.

Previous women’s matches in the country have seen the competitors cover their entire bodies in special ring gear, so will likely be the same for the upcoming event on October 21.

More history to do at Crown Jewel

It will be another special moment for women around the world as WWE takes the lead in bringing about positive and progressive change in Middle Eastern society. It is well documented that women’s rights are limited in the country, but this is once again a step in the right direction. You can’t deny that seeing the women, young and old, in the crowd at these events, seeing the women of WWE in action, shows them that they can be whatever they want to be in life. No matter how much criticism WWE receives for hosting these events, these women’s matches will be remembered forever. It is hope.
