Spartanburg MP placed on paid leave after shooting man on Friday

Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said the deputy involved in a shooting death Friday night has been placed on paid leave pending an investigation by the state’s law enforcement division. state of SC.

Deputies responded to a woman assaulted by a man with a machete around 10:32 p.m. Friday at a Strange Court residence in Spartanburg County, according to Lt. Kevin Bobo.

Once they arrived, deputies said they saw a woman with visible injuries and a man still armed with a machete and a hammer inside the residence, Bobo said.

The deputies ordered the suspect to drop the weapons several times, but he failed to do so, resulting in the suspect being shot by one of the deputies, Bobo said. The suspect was later identified as Jimmy Ray Whiteside, 63, 205 Strange Court, according to the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office.

The woman was taken to hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries, but the suspect died at the scene, Bobo said.

None of the deputies were injured in the incident.

SLED has been notified and has responded to the scene, and SLED is handling the investigation, Wright said.

In a statement, SLED says it is investigating the shootings involving law enforcement officers at the request of the agency involved in the incident. When asked to investigate the shooting, “SLED’s goal is to conduct a thorough and independent criminal investigation as quickly as possible under the circumstances.”

SLED says the Spartanburg County incident was the eighth shooting involving an officer this year in South Carolina. In 2021, there were 40 shootings involving officers in South Carolina; two involved the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.
