My friend and I were driving through a small town. It was a beautiful day and we had lunch on the way. Nevertheless, Friend was upset. “Give it to me straight,” he moaned. “Are we crossing the bridge or not?

It was true, I had kept him going, but only because my old banger was playing. “Sorry,” I say. “I need a garage.”

“How about we go to the quarry instead?” he suggested. He also wanted to see his stunning tourist attraction, five and a half miles southeast of the bridge.

“No detours,” I told him. “Besides, the sun is out – we’re going to have a great time.” And I reminded him of the turn of the city in a 1979 novelty hit.

Our first stop was its cathedral. Much of it dates from the 13th to 16th centuries, but it is believed that there was a bishop based at the site for nearly 1,500 years. Ami was not impressed. “It’s even older than your car, and just as heavily repaired,” he scoffed.

He also disliked the nearby port, which shares part of its name with the quarry. Friend thought it was a poor substitute for his crossing. “It wasn’t quite the wonder of its age – like the bridge was,” he grumbled.

Then it darkened and under a slate gray sky we visited the pier. Ami’s mood improved, as we could now see the bridge, two miles southwest of us. It cleared up even more when we opened a bottle of cider.

Time to make up, I thought. “No hard feelings, huh? I ventured. “Let’s hug.

Friend stepped back. “Don’t you dare try to hug me,” he growled.
