GLEN ALLEN, Va. — The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee women’s golf team set an ODAC championship record by carding a 301 (+13) on day one of competition at the conference championship Sunday afternoon at the Dominion Club.

W&L eclipsed the old 18-hole record of 306, set by the Generals in the final round of the 2018 championship.

The Blue and White hold a 14-stroke lead after the opening day of the 2022 Championship, with Bridgewater shooting a 315 (+27) to take second place by three strokes over Lynchburg (318). Sweet Briar (374), Shenandoah (379) and Randolph-Macon (390) round out the team standings.

First year Marcella Mercer (Bigfork, Montana/Flathead) headlined the generals’ effort on day one, earning an even score of 72 to lead the individual field by one shot over Bridgewater’s Sophia Martone. Mercer started the day with three birdies in his first five holes and held the lead the rest of the afternoon.

Mercer was one of four generals who finished in the top 7 individual golfers on Sunday. Junior Megan Kanaby (Chapel Hill, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) sits in third place with a +3 score of 75, while the first years A Shelmir (Dallas, TX / Highland Park) and Laetitia Roegner (Greenwich, Conn./IMG Academy) are both tied for fifth with a 77 (+5).

Senior Savannah Johnson (Owens Cross Roads, Ala./Huntsville) scored an 84 (+12) and is tied for 13th out of 33 golfers in the event.
